      • Hey guys, good thread here & thanks for all the info... Makes me wonder how I was even able to fly before we had forums.

I've been chewing on the thought to buying an ASW 20 however, I can't get past the backorders. You see some guys are chick magnets & some guys can sniff out a bargain, I however, am very adept at homing-in on an obsolete/discontinued product even before the vendors know. I say this because currently, there's virtually no replacement parts & a little more than half of the optional parts are backordered. I would have thought Hangar 9 would be pressed to make everything available for the holiday season, maybe not.

In any case, if someone has any roadmap or product cycle dates for the ASW 20 could they share their insight?

        Thanks,
        Wormwood

        • It appears they're very popular and everyone wants them.

I looked on the website and it lists them in stock..

I guess a magician would say that your eyes can lie to you but this video makes me a believer. I have run his set up on eCalc and it should not have enough thrust to take off. Has anyone else tried taking off from grass and had any success? What size prop are you turning?

                • 3 bladed prop just arrived - 12 x 8, ready to install and await for the right day to try to take off from grass

                    BobR,

Do you mind telling me where you got that, and which prop exactly? I would like to try the same thing you are doing. I am hoping to make it to the store tomorrow to place my order for a new ASW 20.

                    Cheers, Jeremy

                  • Have you put a watt meter on this combination? It would be interesting to see the power output as compared to the standard setup. The ability to take off without the trolley is VERY appealing.

Running stock battery, motor and ESC I am pulling 52 amps and 1230 Watts with the three bladed aeronaut 12x8 prop. So the good news is although you do not get the climb rate of the stock configuration you get the chance to take off from the ground without worrying about stressing the motor (over 80amp - although I think the power 60 laughs at that limitation. Capable of more) I am awaiting better weather but video in this post shows it being done on a 2 bladed prop. Another note you will get an additional 2 minutes of burn time on motor for a total of 5 minutes. The stock configuration calculates at approximately 3 minutes. Bottom-line you get enough burn time on motor to climb to 5000 feet total what ever the configuration. Once I actually test weather and time permitting, I hope to post a video.

                  • Well you've convinced me this is something to try. What about a bit more pitch if the climb rate seems a bit anemic?

As to the Power 60, you're right that it will produce a LOT more power. I've got one in a Seagull PT-19 with a 6s 5000 battery providing 2100 watts full throttle, which you really never need, and landing with essentially an ambient temperature components after a ten minute flight.

In any case I've ordered a three bladed spinner and yoke to give this a try.

Thanks for the information and looking forward to a video report.

Yes I also agree with your assessment. However, when using the ecalc (and I have learned that it is not perfect but a very good predictor) when going to the 12x10 she will loose thrust as the tips (blades) will stalling and therefore loose thrust. That is the prediction. NOW, I have not tried it thought I would play it save for now and go with the 12x8. I have also tries minor tweaks in the yoke both + and - and the stock yoke, 3 bladed prop at 12x8 is the best I can do without good old trial and error (the error part is what I hate) to launch from ground. Your thoughts?

I would not be concerned about the predicted prop stall as it will 'hook up' pretty early in the ground roll and then generate as much pull as the diameter/pitch combination should. After all, this is the same pitch recommended by Horizon, 16 x 10. The only question I have is if it will produce enough power to give you a good climb rate. There's a video of a Hanger 9 ASW 20 on YouTube from Germany of a flier doing essentially what you are proposing and it appears he has a decent takeoff roll and climb rate, so I'm confident this will work. He is using a Hacker motor and a 12 x 10 three bladed prop made from, if I recall correctly, 13 x 10 blades cut down to 12 x 10.

                      airporter,

If you look at that video of the guy here in Germany, it is not a 3 bladed prop, but simply a two bladed 13x10 that he cut down to a 12x10. So, it seems to me that a three bladed 12x8 would be at least as much thrust as a two bladed 12x10.

                      Cheers,
                      Jeremy

                  • I need to touch up a couple of chips in the paint on my ASW-20.What is the best paint to use to match the color so I don't have to repaint the whole plane.
                    Thanks Tom

                        Hello Jeremy,

                        I purchased from http://www.espritmodel.com/aeronaut-...-spinners.aspx

I have not had the chance to give it a go yet, but the video does not lie. I added third prop as eCalc seem to think it was a better option then 2 blades with 12 inch diameter.

                        Bob

                          BobR,

Thank you for the reply. I was just looking on Esprit's site, it looks like they only have 42mm spinner with the 6mm shaft. The one that Horizon sells is a 45mm diameter. Did you take this into account before cutting the nose off of your fuselage, or are you left with a nose that is 3mm wider than the spinner diameter?

If I am just not seeing an available 45mm 3 prop spinner, please let me know.

                          Cheers,
                          Jeremy

                          Jeremy,

My original build was by Hanger 9 Spec 45mm (cut short and work your way back to specification) the power 60 is a 6mm shaft. The only 3 bladed prop hub I could find was a 42mm. Honestly, 1.5mm per side does show but really not an issue if you want to take off from ground. Additionally it does provide for extra cooling. If I had a chance to do it again and wanted JUST the 3 bladed system then go 42mm and call it a day. The way I have it, I can go either direction. Flexibility is good but your call of course

                          Bob

                          BobR,

Ahh, that makes sense. I had not thought about cooling air to the motor. I will try to keep the motor use to just short bursts. I think I will start with 42mm, and if I decide against the 3 blade system, I can trim it back to 45mm in the future. I would like to just take off from ground, as the cart is just one more thing to haul and retrieve after take off.

                          Thanks for the help!

                          Cheers,
