  • Update continued:
I wanted to mention something to watch out for. The right wing is drawn to represent the full scale wing. It has some differences that require you to ignore the layout and take some accurate measurements from the left wing drawing. The first one that bit me in the butt is the aileron is one full bay longer on the right. I didn't realize this until I had already cut aileron out. This caused me to have to rebuild the one bay that had been cut out and caused the aileron ribs to not line up with the wing ribs. Then the second problem is with the position of the aileron leading edge. Ignore the lines on the right wing drawing and measure off the left wing. In my humble opinion it would have been better to draw the right wing the same as the left and include the full scale version on a different sheet.

        Thanks Dion!

    • I am really looking forward to building these wings. My last 3 projects involved very complex wings, one of which I was "engineering as I went", so I'm looking forward to something simple and straight forward!

Yeah these wings are about as easy as it gets. Good thing too because I'm running out of time.

    • Update:
I made some good progress on the spoilers today.

First I thought I had better clean up a little. The wood chips have been flying.

The spoilers are made from 2 pieces of 1/16" ply laminated together. I sandwiched 2 CA hinges in between. The control horns are cut from some scrap aluminum and I dug up a couple of ball joint rod ends for connectors.

I cut a slot almost through one layer of ply for the control horn and then epoxied them in.

I cut a slot for the hinges between the top sheeting and the spar cap with an X-ACTO knife.

And one servo is mounted. One more servo and I'll be done with the spoilers. I used Hitec HS 81 servos here.

Here you can see the hinges. The plywood pieces are offset about 1/16" to allow the spoiler to raise 90 degrees.

That's it for now. I'll tackle the aileron servos next.

Both aileron servos are done. Nothing new or interesting here. I used Hitec HS 225 BB servos for the ailerons.

The wings were put on the fuselage for the first time to fit the root ribs and glue in the retention tabs.

Still a lot to do. Fill, sand, cover, paint, canopy, electronics, program radio, balance...

Thanks Kenneth! Not necessarily more work than expected but much less time to do it than needed.

          • Ok a quick update. I glassed the wing tips and rear 1/4 of the center section shoulders and all the filling and sanding is done. I'm covering now and I won't post any more photos until she's done but here is a teaser. I think I got the look right.

That's it for now. Still not sure if I'll finish in time for Huntsville.

            • I know I said I wasn't going to post more photos but I kinda need to. This is a shout out to Swiss1 (Jeremy). Dean's plane has a spring mounted swivel type tail wheel. The closest I could come to it with what I had is in the following photos. I was wondering if you might have something a little more to scale, say 1/2" or smaller. I think this one is going to look ridiculously big. I've searched on the web and everything is for power planes and too big.

This one is 7/8" diameter. Needs to be 1/2" or smaller.

              • Sullivan makes nice small tail wheels. They are commonly used at the wing tips on the bigger gliders.

It looks like you should be able to fit them to the bracket you have. Great build and thanks for sharing.

                    • Hey guys, thanks for your replies. I was hoping to find a complete assembly with a 1/2" wheel and that Jeremy might be able to bring it to Huntsville. The smallest Ohio-Superstar might work but I think I'll go with what I have and put a 1/2" Sullivan wheel on it. At least I have something that will work. Thanks again!!!
