Well I am home after an easy drive, al the while wishing I had the time to stay for the fourth day of wonderful weather. Thanks again and again to Jim for putting on this great event again this year. It is always a pleasure to visit the mountain.

More thanks to the tow pilots and tug owners. These aerotow events need a lot of equipment and a lot of talent on the tugs. We had an outstanding array of tugs and pilots at this event. I do a little towing at our home field so I really appreciate what you all do.

Thanks for posting that video, the plane in question is a Bolus Albatross, I bought it from Bob Turner at the event for display in the shop, but after some collaboration with Michael Kelly aka Jelly, we borrowed a receiver from Tom Mavaro and set the plane up in the Hotel on Friday evening and it flew on Saturday with the help of Len and Snatch Mcleod doing the towing with his Beaver. And it flew very well indeed, I have assembled it to hang in the shop and have decided to give it a yearly outing at the Cumberland Summer event to knock the dust off!

There are events, and then there are EVENTS!

The first participants arrived on Tuesday, July 14 and the last to go departed on Tuesday, July 21. We had one participant that was here for eight days of flying...the guy with the big black trailer with an awning...and a couple of sailplanes...



In all, we had 33 visiting pilots and 3 local pilots register to fly. They came from as far away as Arizona, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.

We served lunch Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday plus dinner at the field Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.



We used 5 cases of water, 2 gallons of coffee, 15 bottles of soda, and 4 gallons of ice tea.




Eight people camped on site. Five in camper trailers, two in tents, and one in the new hangar.



Arcus Barcus Bumburs stole our hearts!



Serial #002 Aviation Concepts 1/3-scale Schweizer SGS 2-33A made its maiden flight much to the delight of both Erich and Gunny.

We had three father and son teams, Scot & Daniel, Steve & Kevin, and Stephane & Matthieu.



Flying was from sun up until beyond sundown.



The spirit of family and cooperation was everywhere. Here is Swiss1 helping a newbie who went on to make a dozen successful aero tows.

Hi Bob,

Absolutely awesome video. For me it really captured the feeling I got when I came to Highpoint last year for the first time. It took me right back to the morning I first drove out of the woods and started up to the field. Nicely done.

There are a couple of shots of your quad and you in the photo album I just posted.

Once again a wonderful event Jim, thanks for sharing that mountain with us and making it even better by adding the Hangar, Maintenance Building, Meeting Hall, Mess Hall, Lookout Platform and Sleeping Room!! What do you call a building like that? Brilliant! Thanks to all the Ladies for serving us grub at lunch and dinner, although the table service was a little lacking
Big thanks to Len as always for his presence, with his help and equipment, Tom had a main gear failure on the Pawnee which we rebuilt to put back into service the next day, during the repair we needed particular tools and plywood which I or Tom did not have, but we knew Len would, if it was not for him and his trailer there would be a lot of grounded planes at these events. Its hard to know what you need to take to an event until you need it, but Len is always ahead of the curve, the only thing he forgot for Cumberland was his Iron and Ironing Board "IRONMAN" is on for the next event, so bring along your freshly washed clothes everyone! I had my most memorable flight on Sunday with the Arcus, I had been flying out in the valley along with Bob, Don, Len and Scott for 30 minutes or more when I decided to make a few circuits toward the pits and back out to the ridge watching the plane accelerate and gain altitude.After about 10 minutes of that I decided to fly down the ridge to set up for a landing, but noticed how the Arcus once again gained height and even more speed, this made me do circuits along the ridge and then Len joined in with the Nimbus, we got in a groove and it was a mesmerizing ballet of close formation which could have lasted for ages, we milked it the best we could!
Maybe you can install a PA system Jim with music to help us execute some nice routines!
Great to see the usual guys and some new ones too.
This event gets the SCC stamp of approval

Was a weekend of firsts for me, first trip to Cumberland, first airplane lost in a tree (and recovered!), first inverted speed pass with the Blanik, and now my first post on here! Thanks Jim, Len and everyone else for a spectacular event. The field and view is gorgeous there and I had a great time flying all day. Looking forward to the next one!
