Update:
Continuing with center section.

I aligned an R1 rib to the R1A rib by means of the wing rod and the alignment pin sleeves. Then marked the position of the tongue on it. Then stacked the R1 and R2 ribs and drilled and filed the hole for the tongue in them.




Here is how the retention tongue will glue into the wing.

That's as far as I can go on the center section until I get the CF strip for the trailing edge. In the meantime I will work on the turtle deck.

Update:
I got the turtle deck formers glued in and laid out the stringer locations and the center section is sheeted.




Tomorrow I will get the turtle deck stringers glued in and start working on the canopy frame.

Update:
I got the turtle deck finished and started on the canopy mods. Is it just me or are stringers a PITA!!!

I like to prepare the stringers before gluing them in. Much faster and easier than sanding them in place. I modified this Dremel abrasive wheel using a dressing tool.

Update continued:

I just happened to remember to check the wing incidence, something I meant to do much earlier. It's not like I could change it now but it came out exactly 2 degrees.




Notice that the sheeting above the wing is changed from the plans and also former Q is removed.

I like the modification of the Dremel bit, I once modified one to make small triangular strips and mounted it in the Dremel Router attachment which made the job quick and precise!

Yeah I started to use the Dremel router table but then decided it would be easier to just chuck it up in the drill press. Especially since there is no safety concern with the abrasive wheel.

Update time:
I started chopping away at the center section today. Mostly head scratching, but I got a little done.

Here is a good shot of Dean's Cherokee. Notice the fixed rear canopy. It goes all the way back to what is former H on the model. It starts at approximately former G on the model. The forward removable canopy extends aft past the LE of the wing to what is former G on the model. The standard Cherokee's canopy stops just in front of the wing and there is no rear canopy. Also notice that the canopy bows at former G are angled back more than what former G would be on the model.


Here is where I'm at presently. I cut former G loose flush with the wing sheeting. I reshaped it and added some laminated bows to it for strength. The bows are recessed to accept the clear plastic. I glued it back on angling it back more to match full scale plane. I added a 1/32" plywood face to former H for aesthetics and added laminated bows to it also. I removed a large section of the center section between the span of former G and filled with plywood to match the full scale plane. Then I added the shelf of 1/32" ply.


Next I will fill in the LE voids where the cut was made and then start on the forward canopy frame.

Hello Len, yeah Dean did a great job giving his plane a more modern look with the canopy. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hey Jeremy, I'm going to cover it with my favorite material, Solartex in natural. I think it will match Dean's covering on the full scale. The trim and lettering will be Nelson Hobby paint.

Thanks for checking in and for the kind words. I have found photos of the bare frame in other posts online which have helped a lot. When you restore a great vintage glider to the caliber of yours people are going to take lots of photos. It's going to be a challenge but I will try to do her justice.

So the paint will match the Full Scale! I cannot tell from the pictures but is it white or an off white to cream shade?
