  • Rosenthal ASW-28 1/3 scale

Ever since seeing the photo of Jurgen Mayer making a low inverted pass with his 1/3 scale Rosenthal ASW-28 at the Memaloose airstrip in Idaho, I was hooked (circa 2002-Sailplane&Electric Modeler)

Well, I'm finally getting going on it. When I ordered it from the previous ower of Rosenthal, Philippe Stampf, he had the 5/6m carbon knuckle hinge wing in stock, how could I say no....
Of course now its even easier ordering a Rosenthal Sailplane as Bruce DeVisser has started importing them.

All of the flying surfaces are being glassed with 0.5 oz. cloth and then painted

First order of business was to build a storage box to protect it from the hanger rash gremlins that so often infest my garage (and Van)

Started on the 5m tips, Stabilizer and Rudder glassing them with 0.56 oz cloth from thayercraft.com (104) and West Systems Epoxy.

Scott, I have to say that the Memaloose airstrip is not in Idaho, but Oregon. You can look out over Hell's Canyon and see Idaho, but you are standing in Oregon. I was fortunate enough to be there the day that photo was taken, and have flown out over the canyon many times. From the airstrip to the canyon floor is about 4500 feet nearly straight down, and when the air in the canyon heats up a bit from the morning sun, the lift is just incredible. The Snake River is in the bottom of the canyon, and Idaho on the east side of the canyon. Fun times! Wil Byers still holds the event nearly every year, so come on up to Joseph, Oregon, and a side trip to Memaloose airstrip and fire lookout tower.
That said, the ASW-28 is a great flying glider in most any scale, the bigger, the better. I believe Rosenthal used to make a 1:2.5 machine that is wonderful to fly--at the Memaloose, or anywhere else.

          Hi Larry,

Thanks for the clarification, I guess I'm showing my bias toward Idaho over Oregon.......

Started in on the wings......and yes, my hanger does show remnants of the 80's

Ran in to a minor issue when I was smoothing the top surface of the left wing..... the center of the spoiler area skin wasn't stable and had lifted a little. So out came the 10cc syringe and a CA tip to get the epoxy up underneath the skin.

Then on to the 0.75 oz fiberglass to the top of the wing and the second flow coat to fill the weave.

Many Thanks to Asher Carmichael for his excellent cockpit fiberglass "kit'.

In this case consisting of seat pan, back, headrest and side comb moldings. Excellent fit in the Rosenthal 28 fuselage.

Where can it get one of those kits ( how much), thinking of redoing my cockpit on my 23 years old 1/3 ASW 20.

Do you have a particular sailplane 'N' number that you'll copy or will it be spurious?

Nothing in mind at present....so I guess it will be Spurious when it happens.........
