  • Midour 152cc Scale Tug

It's time to put together this tug I picked up last summer from Icare-rc. It's a scale model of the "Midour" which is a two seat tricycle gear tow plane.

The Midour is a double-seat, low-wing monoplane of conventional configuration, fitted with a fixed, tricycle undercarriage. Developed in the workshop of the ACBA using the wings of a Robin DR400, the Midour first flew in the early 1970s and four additional examples to the original design have been built, along with two modified versions.

Although the Midour is sometimes equipped with only a single seat, a passenger can be carried behind the pilot, to assist in the release of gliders being towed.

    General characteristics
    • Crew: 1
    • Capacity: 1 passenger (optional)
    • Length: 6.81 m (22 ft 4 in)
    • Wingspan: 8.72 m (28 ft 7 in)
    • Wing area: 14.2 m2 (153 sq ft)
    • Empty weight: 550 kg (1,213 lb)
    • Max takeoff weight: 790 kg (1,742 lb)
    • Powerplant: 1 × Lycoming O-360 4-cyl. horizontally-opposed piston engine, 130 kW (180 hp)

    Performance
    • Maximum speed: 300 km/h (186 mph; 162 kn)
    • Cruising speed: 190 km/h (118 mph; 103 kn)
    • Rate of climb: 3.72 m/s (732 ft/min)

The Model version was another offering from Top Model Fr, which is the company producing the popular Bidule line of tow planes. Since this had the look of a real plane its a no brainer to get one and see how it works.
Unpacking the box I was pleased to see a quality built model with a nicaae looking covering job. The fiberglass cowl is a two piece unit, pre painted and drilled to fit the fuse precisely and the landing gear is a really well made copy of the nose wheel on the Bidule. All three gear are shock absorbing struts with trailing link axles.

I noticed that too...Thinking maybe this was just a figment of someone's imagination, or a ruse being used to throw someone off the scent of the actual project (Swiss1), but maybe just too busy playing with the new parts to take pictures!?

You fellows are pretty demanding. A guy posts at 11:00 pm that he is going to start building an airplane. By 10:00 am the next morning you expect pictures! I assume even Len needs some sleep and time to get things organized. I am looking forward to pictures though. Hope building goes well.

...but, but, Len is a supernatural mystical being that does not require sleep...how else could he possibly produce all of the sailplanes and aircraft...and now he doesn't even need to eat, he is just all muscle! LOL

Thanks for bailing me out Scot, truth be told Steve is right, I literally fell asleep with the computer on my lap. I've been a bit busy with work and the damn gym, so I do get wiped out late in the evening.
I'll have plenty to post this weekend.

I'll even explain some of these teasers.

It's finally getting somewhere its worth showing.
The kit is really nice, although built very light, so it's certainly not a Bidule. I sure wish someone would fly over to China with a plane full of good GLUE....

It's still amazes me with all the planes they export they can't get good glue.

            Anyway.
            Moving on

The first thing worth talking about is the motor choice. I originally intended to install a DA 150 in the plane, but after attempting to install the motor and canisters, it simply wouldn't fit.
The instructions call out for the MVVS 152, So I contacted MVVS in the Czech republic and ordered the motor, cans and headers which arrived about 3 weeks later. The company was very professional to deal with and the cost was about $600 cheaper than its equivalent.

Mounting the MVVS motor starts with filling in the holes drilled when we tried to install the DA 150.
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_4682.jpg Views:	2 Size:	13.7 KB ID:	14801

To do this I cut some fluted dowl and soaked them in West System epoxy for a while.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_4641.jpg Views:	1 Size:	5.4 KB ID:	14800

After about 30 min I thickend the epoxy and tapped the dowels into the holes and set it aside for the night.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_4642.jpg Views:	1 Size:	6.4 KB ID:	14799

Fitting the MVVS motor is next. It's a rear carb setup, so I need to make an extension for the upper motor mounting holes, otherwise the bolts will very close to the carb hole in the firewall.
( something to think about in future Bidule / ZDZ 180 install )

A mount template was made and we began making the mounts.

Interesting ignition voltage with 9.3 the minimum? What are you thinking for battery choice on that? Do optical kill switches work ok at the higher voltages as well? I really like the Powerbox optical kill I am running in the Bidule, but don't think it has an output voltage choice in the range of the MVVS module. I'm also surprised the mounting pattern on the MVVS is different than the DA. I thought most of those guys made them the same. Interesting details.

Google "powerbox sparkswitch" (sparkswitch as one word)

Or get it from Horizon Hobby http://www.horizonhobby.com/sparkswi...switch-pbs9060

                Tim,

I get Powerbox products from Duralite Flight Systems, but there are other vendors that carry their products, like Chief Aircraft. Here is a link to the Powerbox Sparkswitch. Note that you have to choose which output voltage you want by which Sparkswitch to order (5.9V or 7.4V).

                Len,
Doesn't look like this will work for the MVVS ignitions....

                You're right Scot,
I checked the Horizon Hobby simple 'optical kill switch' and it will take up top 20v, so for 15.00 I'll go that route... Go figure?

So the spark switch is what you use to turn the ignition on and off. what will you use to supply 9.5 to 13v to the engine ignition system?

                  3 cell Lipo.
The reason why the ignition is showing the wide voltage is because it has 4 spark plugs, two ignition modules. So instead of having two 2 cell packs, they do it with one three cell.

The motor mount was fabricated but we had to put it on the sander due to some top cowl interference, a bit of grinding and "problem solved"
