  • Graupner Discus 2b 1/3.3 scale

There is a model that I always wanted, the first one was a DG300 from multiplex. I owned it before leaving Europe and loved it... Checked!

The second one has been the Discus 2b from Graupner 4.54m scale 1/3.3 on of my friend own a Ventus that is the same fuselage but with longer wings, and I have been impressed by the speed range that maching can go with obeshi wings. My friend put crazy speed run and even DS it! So when I had the occasion to add this to the fleet I have been very happy!

Well it was couple years ago and I need to keep that project moving, After a halt on building this spring it is time to speed it up if I want to fly before winter.

    First landing gear is in

Wings have some filler applied and be sanded

And then wing wiring is in...

This week end was time to take care of the canopy.

After thinking a bit how locking the canopy I found some interesting hardware in my stach

              Untitled by steffruelle, on Flickr

instead of having it like a scale latch, I did the reverse as I am not intending putting a windows in the canopy.
I drilled the canopy frame and the fuse to put these two pieces in place and shoveled a tube with piano wire from the TE of the wings fairings.

Easy to do when you have your mind set, hardest part has been to come up with the idea
Next step is to glue the canopy, first couple adjustments, then tape the fuselage frame, and tape the canopy over it. Trick to keep canopy frame in place is to use paper clip with a piece of sand paper under it to avoid it to slip away...
Then canopy glued poured in using the landing gear doors as an access to the interior, what could help is to use a syringe with a piece of tube over it to reach the front...

                Canopy is glued in

                Untitled by steffruelle, on Flickr

I am probably on the opposite end of the spectrum but I love when they are tinted in blue....

Then incidence pin are glued in

                Untitled by steffruelle, on Flickr

That start to look good, I think it should not take too much effort to have it flying before Cumberland

Wings harness are done the usual way with DB9 plugs

                Untitled by steffruelle, on Flickr

And receiver installed, waiting the glue to cure to balance the sailplane and locate the propulsion battery holding plate

                To be continued tomorrow

Tow release is in and the support for the battery is glued in.

Only covering the wings is left

Very cool!!! Looks great too!!! Where do you get kits like this? That is with foam core sheeted wings and fiberglass fuse. All I can find is expensive all glass ARFs.

Yes it is foam core sheeted wings with epoxy fuse, this type of kit can be found around but it is hard when you see one you have to get it fast.. I got couple in my stash...I found one every other year...

Tonight the other wing is done

                            Untitled by steffruelle, on Flickr

Here is couple tricks for live hinges covering with vinyl :

On upper surface, put the aileron down as much as you can and hold it in place with laundry clamps, apply vinyl and once done push vinyl in the gouge as you are bringing up the aileron

For the lower part here is couple pictures, same principle, and when the vinyl is folded in between aileron and the wing just go in with an xacto knife...
