Sunset on the mountain..........
So great to get time together there with everyone to fly our sailplanes as well as spend time catching up.
What a wonderful event Jim !............a huge thank you for all that you do to make this possible.
Thanks to all those that made the lunches and dinners each day........that's a lot of work to get meals together for such a large group.
Thank you to the tow pilots.....Len, Steve P, Steve K, Kevin K, Barry (?...with the amazing scale Wilga).......you all kept us in the air very successfully.
Looking forward to the next time on the mountain.

Jim - Thank you so much for your hospitality and for sharing your amazing property with us! I also want to thank everyone for helping me get back up to speed flying scale after a too-long absence from the scene. Awesome towplanes, fantastic tow pilots, fun times, amazing new friends and new experiences. Thanks to Bob M for bringing a large inventory of unavailable parts and to Len and Kevin for getting me around the patch a couple of times. I am planning to return either in the fall or next year. Will be in PA next month!

Summer Cumberland 2018......
I love going to the mountain during the summer. Long days, campfires at night and warm temps are the perfect recipe for a great time. This year was no different other than the temperatures actually being cooler than past years and just about perfect.
Sitting around the fire is such a joy after a long day of flying, but nothing beats the late evening " Carrier Landing" attempts made by a half dozen pilots . I'm still laughing about that.
Thank you Jim for being such a great host, and to the cooks and food prep people. We know its a big undertaking and you guys and gals make it look effortless.
My special thanks goes to all the tow pilots who chipped in to help keep the sailplanes in the air. Remember that without a tow pilot it's not an Aerotow, it's a swap meet.
Providing a tow plane is a huge investment in time and money, and to put as many hours on them as we do takes hours of maintenance and dedication.( except Kevin, who didn't event dust off the pawnee) We have a dedicated group of guys that always work well together and help and support each other. What a dream team.
Classy move of the event goes to TOM PACK. After loosing a tow line due to a release issue with his glider, he walks over to my trailer and hands me a brand new tow line as a replacement.
Thank you Tom.
Unfortunately I did not get many photos, but I did get one of the Smelly Yak.

I fully agree with all that has been said about Summer Cumberland thus far.
But I wish to add a special note of thanks to Jim and Marcie Dolly, for taking care of me for three days after my truck died Saturday evening. I cannot begin to enumerate all of the kind things they went out of their way to see that I had food and shelter, storage for my trailer and a hundred other things as well. The Dolly’s are truly a class act, and I shall never be able to repay their kindness.
I obtained a rental car yesterday afternoon and drove the 472 miles home, arriving just before midnight. My vehicle now languishes at the local dealer in Cumberland. Their last word to me was that they didn’t know how long it would be before they could even look at it to diagnose the problem.
I refuse to let this matter get me down. I look at this as a speed bump on the highway of life.
Again, my heartfelt thanks to Jim and Marcie.

Right on Al... Jim took care of me too when my van brakes failed at the bottom of the hill, and also to add he took care of my food supply when my RV fridge failed at the top of the hill. I also have to say thanks to Jeff D. For also storing my drinks in his RV fridge. And thanks to both the Kremers for helping me to try and diagnose the fridge problem. Oh well....
But anyway I still had fun and thanks to the tow pilots and Swiss 1 & Darrell for cooking and of coarse JimD for running a top notch class soaring event.Gunny

A great event as always Jim, although I had some misfortune with the Arcus, and my tool box slid out the back of the van and emptied it's entire contents in the grass! Erich is taking care of the Arcus with the help of Len! Thanks to all who pre-ordered merchandise from me and you guys who made a purchase from the sales table! Tom Pack said that bad things come in 3's and he was right, you don't hear that often
Parked in a Loves parking lot I was struck by a vehicle and pushed 4 feet into a car parked on my left, which belonged to a girl that had just served me my coffee in McDonalds, adding more damage to the rear of the van which had been hit on the right rear a month prior and was booked into the body shop the following day! Otherwise after a 1 1/2 hour delay I made it home

Once again a hardy thanks to Jim and his entire crew for putting on another memorable first class event. Also to all the tow pilots - Len, Team Kremer, Steve, Bob and Barry. You really kept the line moving. Jeremy and this cooking crew - thank you for great meals. And the entertainment feeding Arcus (yes it's in the album).
Speaking of album, Here's the link
Enjoy!
I discovered that Cumberland offered a unique camera position that caught me of guard (read: did not expect to get THOSE shots). So we have some different towplane towing glider shots with some neat angles toward the tail end of the album. A very realistic shot of Gunny's 2-33 and Kevin's Pawnee that looks right out of the end of Harris Hill....
I cant's say enough about the enjoyment seeing friends and making new ones once again at one of the premiere locations for Aerotowing. Loved the campfires by the campers, smores, evening / night flying and comradery. If you haven't made it here yet. Make it a point!
Also thank you to all the photogs posting there great shots. It tells the story over and over.
Till next time,
Jeff D.
