Aviation Concepts Schweizer SGS 2-33A ~ Scale Cockpit Kit

Gunny has released his newest accessory for his wonderful 1/3-scale kit. This will get my build back on track (hopefully) since building out a cockpit is what stopped me to begin with. The build was moving along and the interior details where coming together much like what I did in the 1/4-scale model.



All of the parts were made from balsawood



This is the full-size sailplane that I was using as a reference.

Gunny saw the posts of what I was doing and asked if i would be interested in helping him design an interior kit for the 1/3-scale model...that turned into a long process that got interrupted by other things (like building new bigger tow planes to keep up with the ever expanding move to larger scale sailplanes).

Anyway, we made a series of templates for the interior side panels & seats and sent them off to Gunny.

Then we moved on to making actual parts with more detailed templates.

After a long while, Gunny brought all of our ideas together using his genius for CAD design and production and his unique use of materials to create scale details. He delivered the first interior kit to me and we finally have cleared off the workbench and started on it. So here we go, first the box!



Opening to his 34 page step-by-step directions with full color pictures!!!



Then the goodies.

Gunny elected to use thin G-10 sheet to make the base side panel with balsa parts to flesh out the details. Here is our progress on the left side panels and seats.

Very cool looking work, Gunny makes some nice stuff. Noticed you're using some lexan body paints could you elaborate on its effectiveness?

The acrylic paints are easy to use, no odor, clean up with soap and water, dry fast, good coverage (even on bare wood), durable, come in a lot of colors and can be easily mixed to get unique colors.

Here are my seats after one coat of paint over the bare unsealed balsawood.

Thanks Jim. Those seats look good. I've used that type of paint to paint clear slot car bodies a few years back. I assume one could apply a clear coat to them if you wanted a gloss finish. As I remember most of them had a slightly dull finish which would work well in some applications.

The satin finish is another reason I like these paints for interiors, looks more like vinyl in the full-scale.

The seats were given a coat of black and then repainted with the red to give a more "used" look.



Here the seats are in place.



Control sticks were also installed.



And the trim lever.
