Leonard Niemi designed and built the first Sisu in 1958. It was the first sailplane to fly a distance greater than 1000km. It used an NACA 65 series foil. The wing was swept forward so that 'twist' or wash out was not needed, it being aerodynamically induced. The sailplane was built of metal. Span was 15.24 meters. Length was 6.462 meters.

More pictures. These were taken at the Aviation Museum in Lexington, KY. A staff member allowed me to get up on the balcony for some nice pictures so many thanks, there! There are some rare birds in there! Two especially prized rarities include: a Crosley 'Moonbeam' and a Heath Centerwing Special that hails from the Golden Age of Air Racing.

I had a friend that had one. He had mounted the radio antenna on the one of the gear doors so it pointed down. I saw him landing one day and he had not lowered the gear but when the antenna rubbed on the ground he raised up and lowered the gear safely and landed. "Curb Feeler" for retractable landing gear.
