  • Albatross 4.0 Update

Version 4.0 is out. The app is a total rewrite from the 3.7.5 release.

The first thing to do is update the Snipe and airborne units to the 1.6.Bx current firmware. This firmware works with both Albatross 3.7.5 and with 4.0.

You can now download Albatross 4 from Google Play. It was a total rewrite so now it is compatible with Google's policy. This will not delete your old 3.7.5 version. The old one has a green icon while the new one has a white icon.

This is a handy feature. You have to go and recreate all your models and courses. Nothing is transferred from the old version. As I said the app is a total rewrite..

It took me a few hours to do this. That is because I have five different airborne systems and models to update and recreate. My only test so far has been on the GPS Light ship.

There is one big difference in the audio. The app now does all the processing for the turns and the vario. So now your snipe is a kind of expensive Finch. The good part is you can discard the Bluetooth converter if you had a bluetooth headset. Just connect the headset to the bluetooth on the phone!

I haven't had a lot of run time. Hopefully the rewrite is a little more efficient and you get more phone runtime. And the 4.x release is a work in progress. You can still keep using 3.7.5. The only problem so far is the initial release of 4 does not support rotating the phone to landscape if that is what you were using.

There is one cool feature with courses. There is a QR code for sharing course info between phones.

If you have a connection to the Internet, the planes and courses get saved automatically. You don't have to do anything to save things. If you have two phones or a phone and tablet, the airplane and the course automatically transfers to/from rcmodelspot.

I'm looking forward to trying out the new F3G features. It automates the distance course for F3g/b. When you add a course, there are some new options when creating a task. You can add Soaring, Free Glude, F3b/g and F5b in addition to the GPS Triangle and Scan QR code.

I’ve done the update(s) and found your comments very helpful! Updating all the components…..Albatross, Snipe, Eagle and Raven took some time as each has its own app/firmware update procedure. Got ‘er done though!! Hopefully it all works🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
    Thanks,
    Jim

New updates to all the GPS devices. I've been using 1.7 on the Snipe for a while with the F3g devices I'm testing. Time to update all the other models. The new stuff is all bluetooth BLE and updates from your phone, but the older devices still need updates on the microSD cards to install the new software.

        Ground units (Snipe, Finch) v1.7.B0:
        - new RF protocol v2 supported. Will also work with current protocol
        - satellites blinking (jumping to 0) on Albatross v4 is fixed now
        - Unit will re-sync if plane unit is disconnected from power once already synced to fix channel
        - If unit power is reset ed while on Flight screen on Albatross v4, it will get correct Fix channel information again
        - unit will send plane status flags from v2 RF protocol to Albatross
Plane units (Raven, Sparrow, Swift, Raven 2 series) v1.7.B1:
        - new RF protocol v2 supported
