New to Spectrum

I'm not new to Scale Soaring, but am new to Spectrum, and have a question. I have a AR7010 receiver that comes with a 9645 satellite. My question is, Do I need to use the satillite to have a good radio connection? Most of my experience is with FrSky, and they don't use sats.

The 7010 does have a full range built in receiver, so you should be able to use it on it's own, but no reason not to add the redundancy of the satellite as well.
