12th Annual Cumberland, MD Spring Soar for Fun

I've had a number of inquiries about the date for the Spring Soar for Fun.

IF we have the event, the date will be March 18-21, 2021

Currently, the field has not been accessible for almost 3 weeks because of snow and ice accumulation on the road. The long range forecast is calling for colder than average and wetter than average conditions for at least the next month.

At this point, I cannot be sure that the road and field will be in reasonably good condition for the event. The soil has a lot of clay content and gets very soft and slippery when wet. Heavy traffic can do significant damage, so we will need to get closer to the date before we can be sure if conditions will be okay.

Last spring I spent $12,000 getting the road in shape for the season, and remember, we did not have the spring event last year.

Last Sunday, 14th, Dustin hiked up to the field with me to check on things. A mile and a half, up hill, in ankle deep snow with ice crust, and 20 degree temperature. Impressed myself that it wasn't all that bad!

Working on the road last year on March 16, 2020. Cut back overgrowth and many dead trees along the steep bank section plus widened the roadbed. Then hauled many large triaxle dump truck loads of gravel. Notice how dry things are because very little snow and rain last winter.

I was building in the furnace room and adding the kitchen this time last year.

By March 8th, Spring was definitely in the air!!!

Thanks for the wintertime pics, Jim. High Point Aviation being one of my favorite places in the world, I keep track of what the weather is doing there year round. I've been wondering how much snow you got and what it looks like. Looks like snowmobile country now. Don't worry about making a certain date for your events. We'll come whenever you are ready. We really appreciate all that you do.

Dont give these guys ideas. I can see some of them adding trailer space for a snowmobile to get to the too of the hill.

Had single digit cold yesterday, but starting to warm up now. Hope to get above freezing for at least a little bit today! Here is the weather station at 8:00am and now!

Dustin went with me on the 1.2 mile trek up the mountain again yesterday. Snow is drifted in many areas and only UTV's with high ground clearance and very aggressive tires can make it up the road. Snow drifts are deep and dense, will take a while for them to melt away (once the temperature stays above freezing)...and it is snowing again this morning!!!

Looked like a perfect day to maiden that new Diamond. Nice sun shine, light wind from the NW, 25 degree temp. OK, two out of three isn't bad. Thanks for the the trip to the top. I didn't even break out in a sweat;-) Also, none of that tingling in the nose , fingers and toes.

But for "Cold LiPo Syndrome," that could have been possible...then again, if I had kept the LiPo inside my coat it would have been nice and warm!
