  • New England Aero Tow - May 19-22, 2016 - Salem, Connecticut

Scale Soaring in the Connecticut skies May 19-22, 2016. Join us for an AMA-sanctioned scale sailplane flying weekend from a beautiful site in Salem, CT

Towing from a manicured grass field, the surrounding farm fields and rural terrain produces fantastic thermal activity! The Connecticut coast has lots to offer including beaches, great seafood, the historic town of Mystic and the Mystic Seaport, ocean beaches of Rhode Island and the 24-7 action at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino Resorts. Towns of Norwich, New London, Groton, Flanders, Niantic, Mystic, Lyme and Westerly offer a range of accommodations.

WELCOME BEGINNERS: If you've ever had an interest in aero tow, please join us for some hands-on learning. If you own a scale sailplane or are interested in getting started, we'll be certain to help you understand the basics, get some stick time, and come away ready to take on future aero tows with the skills and confidence you'll need.

Tow donation: $45 for all four days, $15 any one day. Grill lunch & beverages available for purchase Friday - Sunday

Registration: At the field. 2.4G radios encouraged. Current AMA or MAAC membership is required to fly.
Team PowerBox Systems Americas... If flying were the language of men, soaring would be its poetry.

            Great news Jim.
We're looking forward to another top notch event. The club had a field maintenance day recently and we rolled the field with a huge road construction roller. It's FLAT now.

I'm there Thursday through Sunday. This event could be re-named the Bidule convention with 4 or more showing up. I'll be pleased to be in the tow crowd and the glider guider group as well. Already prepping the fleet.

              Jim,
Any thoughts on how to organize the tow operators? I'm calling Gunny now for a set of brakes....

If it is as busy as usual, we may need to keep two tow planes going much of the time. The Bidule can run close to 60 minutes per tank and the Porter will run 70 minutes per tank...those 180cc ZDZ monsters may not go quite as long, but am am guessing you will get about 45 minutes per tank. So, if we alternate between flying tow and flying sailplanes, we might go two consecutive tanks on tow and then break for soaring...or go half day on tow and half day soaring. Kind of depends on the length of the waiting line.

                        Getting ready for the Aerotow,
Rob brought over his 40% Cub and we installed a header tank to eliminate flame outs on the long nose down return to home.
