  • Time to do some sanding...(aka total upper body workout)...wow that fuselage is long...been sanding for 30 minutes...wow, that fuselage is long!!!

The thing I like about sanding is when it is done and you have a nice smooth part as the reward. As we progresses from the rear forward, you can see how the "steps" in the sheeting become a continuous smooth curved surface. Loving the results!!!

The beauty of a wood planked structure! Lovely! Great job!

  • Looking good Jim. Been thinking about glassing the outside of my fuse. That idea is still up in the air. Could just glass underside of the nose to help with that hard grass putting Boo Boos in the balsa.

Yeah... the fuse looks great! +1 with some 0.75 cloth and resin but then you'd have to paint.

  • Love the build Jim. Fantastic job you're doing...

      • Fin and rudder assemblies are coming together, made a quick check of parts fit before continuing on with the fin sheeting.

I am going to put a feature link on the website for your project, should have it ready by tomorrow morning.

Fin and rudder fit nicely, so the bevel was added to the 1/4" thick balsa leading edge of the rudder. Then we took advantage of a warm day to go outside and fiberglass the inside of the balsa fuselage bottom from the wheel well forward. The F28 parts were added on the bottom behind former F5.

          • Jim, if I may suggest a little sheathing or tubing around the servo leads, at least where they pass through the former's!
But nevertheless your build gets the stamp of approval, keep it up.

I'll take only 1 penny... if you double it every day for a month!

          • Remember when I put off sanding the stab and elevator...well today was the day to do it...outside! Instead of 20 degrees we had a nice warm 70 degree day today!

The hardwood spars on both the stab and elevator get sanded to a taper on both ends and top and bottom. easy enough but there is soft balsa right beside that and it also needs to be shaped. sanding two different densities of wood side by side takes a little care. Another consideration is getting the stab and elevator to match.

After giving this some thought, we elected to not sand the 1/4" thick balsa leading edge added to the elevator just yet. Using 3/16" dowel rod stubs, we joined the stab and elevator together and sanded them as a single unit. made shaping ends to match much easier than doing it separately.

notice the amount of tapering on the spruce spars.

A little filler was used to bridge the gap between the center sheeting and the leading edge dowel rod. The predrilled holes in the sheeting were drilled on through the center ribs. We drilled some from one side and then flipped to stab over and finished by drilling back the other direction. Made nice clean holes.

Once the shaping was complete, we sanded the bevel on the balsa elevator leading edge and used the Dremel tool to flair out the pin hinge holes.

            • So Tailored Pilots in the UK has a new pilot head that looks just like Steve McQueen.......perfect for the 1-26 if you do the Thomas Crown Affair version!

Hmmmm.......always liked Steve McQueen, but never did see the Thomas Crown Affair. Seems I have missed an important part of movie history.

Technically this is a 1-23H-15 not a 1-26. Not to say Ol' Steve wouldn't look good in the 1-26!

            • Jim is anyone doing a round tail version?

The fin and rudder could be modified without much trouble, so it depends on the builder. Right now there are no other kits in the hands of builders. Only Peter's prototype and this one have been built. The first batch of 20 kits are scheduled to be available next month. Fifteen of those are planned to be delivered at the Spring Soar for Fun.

            • The fin trailing edge post fits down through a slot in the fuselage and the bottom rib sits flat on a shelf in the aft fuselage. There is another slotted former under this shelf that the very bottom of the fin tail post fits into when fully seated. The fin gets fully sheeted and the rear fuselage sheeting wraps up over and around the fin to capture it.

Thanks! I was wondering how the fin anchored into the fuselage.

Jim, I see your using one of my favorite clamps. Good old masking tape. Provides tension and holds great.

Agreed Gene, masking tape is a staple in my shop...wonder how many rolls I have used over time???

Two so far on this project!

              • Left side sheeting completed and both sides of fin sheeting completed.
